The Conference of the Birds

A play by Sholeh Wolpé

As I wrote this play, I stayed true to the overarching structure of Attar’s story while allowing myself creative latitude as a playwright. I leaned into the humor already present in the tales, heightened it through comedy, and welcomed references to contemporary political and social issues. I also blurred gender roles and imagined a multi-racial cast. My hope is that the play is both engaging and funny, while remaining faithful to the depth and timelessness of Attar’s spiritual message.
